EXPLANATION

The C’tan, often called the Star Gods, were powerful entities composed of pure energy that existed long before most civilizations in the galaxy. When the ancient Necrontyr discovered them, the C’tan were given physical bodies made from living metal.

The C’tan promised the Necrontyr power and immortality. Through a process called biotransference, the Necrontyr transferred their consciousness into mechanical bodies and became the Necrons.

However, the C’tan secretly consumed the souls of the Necrontyr during the process. Eventually, the Necrons rebelled against the C’tan and shattered them into fragments known as C’tan shards.

These shards still possess immense destructive power and are sometimes used by Necron dynasties as living weapons.

WHY IT MATTERS

The C’tan were responsible for one of the most important transformations in the Warhammer 40K universe: the creation of the Necrons. Their actions shaped the ancient galactic wars and continue to influence events in the present timeline.
